Trebling to a Method

Trebling to a Method: Basic

Trebling to a method is another milestone in learning how to ring methods, but what is it? Well, trebling to a method is where you as the treble, plain hunt throughout the method, whether this is Plain Bob, Little Bob, St Clements, Grandsire or any method that has a plain hunting bell(s) – the treble, exactly the same; the only thing that changes is the number of bells and the order you pass them.

At its most basic, trebling to a method is plain hunting over and over – until the end of the method. What sets this apart from your ordinary plain hunting is the reliance on rope sight more than learning the order that you pass the bells as you may have done in plain hunt. While this may be fine at first it is recommended that you start learning rope sight. Your rope sight will develop over time and it’s best to start on a smaller number of bells and work up to a higher number of bells. As we mentioned before, it is basically just plain hunting in a different order. A good way to start this is with Plain Bob Doubles. When the call is said for 'Go Plain Bob Doubles', you should start hunting to the back. As with Plain Hunt the only bell you can start with is the 2 so ring over them first. Now you have 3 bells to worry about each time, the 3, the 4 and the 5. If you have a cover bell, don’t ring over them, they aren’t part of the method! When moving up from seconds place to thirds place, look for the first rope down and ring over them. Once you have done this, eliminate that bell. Do the exact same for moving into fourths place. Eliminate one of the remaining two (the first rope down) and ring over them. Then you are left with only one more bell to ring over. Plain Bob is also made easier as you ring in the same order going up as you do going down, so remember the order of the bells you rang over going up and repeat once more and then you will be back at lead! E.g the order to ring over was 2, 4, 5, 3 so ring over them again to be back at lead (this makes more sense when actually ringing it). Once you have done this, simply repeat for further leads. Remember that this time you will not be starting with the 2, so look for the first rope down and elimate that bell first. Repeat this until ‘that’s all’ is called and then move back into steady rounds. It gets harder when you are not ringing in the same order going up as you are going down but we are going to cover that in another article as it is quite tricky and your rope-sight must be quite good! Please do let us know if you didn’t understand anything here, we will try our best to explain it to you!
